Zimmerman bond hike request rejected

The request was made by Prosecutor Bernardo de la Rionda who argued that the hike was necessary since Zimmerman had received funds from anonymous donors worth about USD 200,000.

However, Florida judge Kenneth Lester rejected the request, saying that further information was needed on the funds before he could agree to reconsider Zimmerman’s bond.

Earlier this week, Zimmerman, charged with the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26, was released on USD 150,000 in bail at a bond hearing, and has been sent to an undisclosed location.

Martin’s killing sparked a wave of demonstrations across the US and revived concerns among the public over the matter of hate crimes.

Zimmerman claims that he had acted in self-defense, saying that the victim had slammed his head into the pavement repeatedly before he fired the gunshot, a claim not supported by facts on the ground.

According to a recent report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, hate crimes target African-Americans in 70 percent of race-based cases in the US.

The issue of hate crimes is one of the most controversial topics in the Unites States and has, in the recent weeks, sparked a number of demonstrations across the country.
