Zimbabwe’s Morgan Tsvangirai weds anew despite court’s refusal to issue marriage permit

She claimed that Mr Tsvangirai, 60, paid a bride price to her relatives last
year and that she was pregnant with his child, but later miscarried.

Ms Karimatsenga’s family is closely connected to Mr Mugabe’s Zanu PF party
which lost elections against Mr Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change
in 2008.

After the marriage license was withdrawn in the Harare Magistrate’s Court, Mr
Tsvangirai’s lawyers tried to arrange the wedding under customary law, but
no official was prepared to officiate at the ceremony. The justice ministry
is controlled by Zanu-PF and all judges are appointed by Mr Mugabe.

“This is political, but we will just ignore it and have a good party,”
said Mr Tsvangirai’s spokesman, Luke Tamborinyika.

“Mugabe’s behavior is spiteful, in poor taste and he has no manners as he
only sent a message that he was not coming at the last minute,” said a
prominent Harare lawyer who asked not to be named.

The lavish wedding was held next to a river at an upmarket lodge venue about
12 miles north east of Harare. It was attended by the deputy Zimbabwean
prime minister, Arthur Mutambara, and the prime minister of Swaziland,
Barnabas Dlamini.

A pipe band from one of Harare’s top private schools played as MR Tsvangirai
walked on a white carpet into the wedding ceremony, while a violinist played
‘here comes the bride” for Macheka.

The court on Friday had declared Mr Tsvangirai already married under tribal
law after seeing video footage of traditional bride price being paid last
November. Polygamy is recognized in tribal law but not in Zimbabwe’s
national laws.

Saturday’s edition of the Herald newspaper, which is controlled by
Mugabe loyalists, accused Mr Tsvangirai of promiscuity and said that errors
of judgment in a string of alleged affairs made him unfit to lead the
country.
