The job of live football pundit is always slightly fraught with a fear of the unexpected, but when you are pitchside the anxiety can go up a level.

Former Premier League defender Martin Keown discovered this to his cost last night while working for ESPN at his old club Arsenal during their FA Cup tie with Leeds United.

The ex-Arsenal defender was working as a smartly-dressed pitchside pundit alongside Robbie Savage when he was smacked in the side of the head by a stray ball live on air.

Keown, 45, was talking with ESPN presenter Rebecca Lowe alongside former Premier League midfielder Savage, with the pair taking audible abuse from the raucous Leeds support behind the goal.

And as Lowe addressed Keown, a ball aimed by a Leeds player warming up hit the pundit square in the side of the head.

Keown dealt admirably well with the incident, brushing it off with a thumbs-up towards the Leeds team.

Having spent two decades as a central defender, another impromptu header was never going to do Keown any harm.

Presenter Lowe asked him: ‘Are you alright?’

Keown responded: ‘Yeah, just about – they can keep doing it.’

Keown made over 300 appearances for Arsenal and won nine trophies, as well as representing England in two World Cups.

Since retiring in 2005, he has worked as a TV pundit for ESPN, BBC, and Al Jazeera Sports.

Keown told the Daily Mail today: ‘It was a former Spurs man who you may have seen hit me with the ball while I was on-air on Monday night.

Robbie Savage on Twitter

‘Alex Bruce tipped me off that his Leeds team-mate Michael Brown – the ex-Tottenham midfielder – was the culprit. At least he was apparently trying to aim at Robbie Savage, not me…’

In a separate and more serious incident that night, Savage was left fuming when Leeds fans pelted him and Lowe with hot dogs, coins and verbal abuse.

He tweeted: ‘Must majority of Leeds fans were a disgrace throwing coins and hot dogs, shouting obscenities to a lady presenter! Disgrace!

‘Leeds fans with there daughters screaming foul and Abusive language at Rebecca hope your proud of yourselves! Shocking!

‘No it wasn’t minority it was majority, you embarrassed yourselves thinking you’re big and clever, mindless idiots!’

You could hear the abuse as they were being interviewed. I think they were probably aiming for Robbie though. No wonder the players are wound up these days. This sort of abuse is everywhere in PL matches and it is racial as well. I gave my season away two years ago as i couldn’t stand all the aggro from our fans.

Cant see it that the aim was for Keown, he’s down no harm to any club or their fans, must have been Savage they were after, and typically, as Leeds did all night, they missed. Got to say, if that kind of determination was displayed throughout the 90mins by the other Leeds players, may have been a different scoreline at the end. As it was, they had to settle for a mis-hit that caught Keown, they should remain in the dressing room for a week as punishment!

Well it is Leeds supporters………But how mindless..spend money on food…then throw it people….Must be getting to much benefit money………..Mmmmmm.

They were actually aiming for Robbie Savage… but like all Leeds footballers – couldnt hit a barn door!…

I did wonder why they were doing the interviews from the pitch – it seems a bit money-pinching to me. Must admit to switching off from their comments so didn’t hear the abuse.

Just a minute, Martin!’ yelled Rebecca ‘That wasn’t a goal”……
‘Oh, wasn’t it?’ shouted Martin. ‘You just watch the Sports Report” on television tonight!’

Football fans = scum of the Earth

Very dangerous place to get hit. He’s a lucky man, hopefully no long term damage that could crop up later in life.

ESPN present from pitchside every week at the rugby and there is never ever anything like how the Leeds fans acted. Just families standing round happy to be enjoying a game together. It’s not just the majority of Leeds fans, it’s the majority of football fans. Listen to them next time any football game is on, most chants are negative, getting at someone, getting at other fans etc. At rugby, it’s only ever cheering on the team. Football is not a sport it’s a disgrace, and your red arrows mean as much as your football infested opinions, zilch.
