It is said that everyone has a book in them and it’s difficult to argue with that. But, like many good intentions most people never get around to writing their book. Unless you’re a natural writer and know your subject well, writing a book is hard and usually unrewarding work. By unrewarding I mean in a financial sense, but the kudos of being published is considerable.
Over the last five years I have co-authored (ghost-written) about thirty books. Most writers, including famous authors, use a ghost-writer. These are known as ghosts as only the author’s name appears on the book cover. Feel free to use any name you like and copyright is yours.
Writing and publishing a book presents you with three challenges. First you need to write your book. The next test is to get it published. And finally there is the marketing to be considered. Some writers can complete a book in a single month, others take years. Publishing your book leaves you with two options. You find a publisher willing to take it on, but good luck with that one. If you’re a new author consider instead looking for a needle in a haystack. It is easier.
The most popular way is to self-publish on Amazon Books / Kindle e-readers. In my case the royalties between the two are split roughly 50/50 but change according to book type. Porn is about 90% of eBook downloads. Secondly, you need to able to handle the complexities of working your way through the Amazon self-publishing process. I am far from dumb but would never have succeeded without the enormous patience of my wife. Months on a learning curve passed before it became routine. Amazon can do it for you at an eye-watering price. You need to sell a lot of books to get a return on your investment.
Those are the easy bits. You are now left with the marketing. Most do as I do and focus on selling their books through social media. You can also send Book Reviews to appropriate media. As a generalization the two most successful book types begin with the letter ‘S’; Sex and Swastikas. There is an appetite for both, but bear in mind there is also intense competition. By likeness, you have finally come up with a hair shampoo that will radiate confidence and lure more boyfriends than Cinders can wave a stick at. Congratulations, stick your brand on the shelf where there’s a million other bottles carrying the same promise.
Now to the royalties, but don’t retire just yet. Conventional publisher or Amazon pre-tax commission (royalty) is 10% ~ 15% of the cover price. So, 100 books sold per month at $10 each will net you $100 ~ $150. This is paid eventually if you are with a conventional publisher or monthly if Amazon published.
Is being an author similar to winning the lottery of life? No; like opera singers, models and musicians all writers begin their career living on family and friend handouts. I would say only about 5% actually make a living from writing. There is the issue of luck; right place, right time with a title that grabs the attention of mainstream media.
Surprisingly (or not) the most successful genre is mommy-porn and the ladies buy most of it. Sadly there are a million competing titles out there. Fifty Shades of Grey made author E L James indecently rich. I am told that the novel is weird rather than steamy and written excruciatingly badly. She was at the right place, caught the eye of mainstream media, and like the hula-hoop her book caught the public imagination. E L James got lucky.
