The war in Yemen continues to escalate, and immense suffering is being caused to the country’s civilian population as a result, whilst the International Community continues to behave as if mass murder is not ongoing.
The United Nations, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), put out a press release this Monday in which they detailed the concern for civilians in Yemen’s escalating tension between the Saudi-backed Yemen government forces and Ansarallah (Houthis). In the article, it states that 56 people, including 3 children, were killed in the past 72 hours, also noting that 45 were injured.
A great deal of the fighting is currently ongoing around Yemen’s Maarib city area as Saudi coalition-backed fighters attempt to undo the advances of Ansarallah. Earlier this week Doctors Without Borders expressed urgent “concern” over the impact the fighting there is having on civilians. The General Federation of Yemen’s Worker Trade Unions also released a distress call to the international community regarding the continuation of Saudi-American maritime piracy in the Red Sea, which has been overlooked by the UN and much of Western media. The continuation of US-Saudi policy in this regard is inextricably linked to the fighting in Maarib, yet the reporting on this issue is almost completely non-existent.
Local Yemeni mediation had resulted in a prisoner exchange in late September, succeeding in releasing 70 Houthi prisoners in exchange for 140 prisoners from the Saudi-backed Yemeni government side. On an international level, however, not much has been done in order to facilitate any significant breakthroughs in order to stop the fighting and end the blockade which is causing an ongoing famine.
Due to the Saudi-led coalition’s brutal blockade, the Ansarallah governing forces have been backed into a corner from which they are only able to fight their way out from. Although the UN recognizes the forces of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi as the legitimate government in Yemen, this fails to recognize the reality that Ansarallah is now recognised by many as a legitimate governing party. Contrary to popular belief in the West, largely due to inadequate media coverage, the group are not just a group of “rebels” who are solely committed to fighting. The Ansarallah has formed a fully functioning and coherent governing system, given its constraints. This government, formed in Sanaa, is fully capable of carrying out rational talks with its opposition if the platform is set respectfully for it to do so.
Yet, despite the promises of the US Biden administration, back in February, to prioritize ending the genocidal war in Yemen, the American government has done anything but this. The pledge made by Biden to end support for Saudi offensive action has amounted to what was expected from many critical observers at the time, absolute garbage. When he said that, he truly meant that his administration can define what offense and defense means. It seems that in the eyes of Joe Biden whatever the Saudi side does is defensive in nature and whatever Ansarallah does is offense.
The US has been caught in the act of operating drones and accused of carrying out several strikes inside of Yemen, a charge that it has denied. The US has even been accused of deploying special forces units inside of the biggest air base in the country.
If the International Community, namely the Biden Administration, chose to do so it could very quickly turn the situation inside Yemen around. However the loyal support to both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which both possess strong assets inside Yemen and seek to exploit both its geography and resources, seem to trump any regard for the innocent civilians starving to death, dying of the cholera epidemic, and that are blown up by lethal munitions fired between warring sides.
All it would take is for the US and UK governments to halt their arms sales and diplomatic support for all those involved and force a balanced peace resolution. If Ansarallah then rejected balanced proposals, which could actually work somewhat in their favor, then US politicians could sit back on their pedestals from which they currently opine on Ansarallah.
The brutal war in Yemen has become a staging ground for the US empire to play with the lives of millions of innocent civilians, whilst claiming to be fighting Iran by proxy. Iran has only seized on the opportunity to back the Yemen Ansarallah movement due to the the US-Saudi coalitions interference in the country. The proxy war ends when the US chooses.
