Yemen mulls drafting new constitution

Political analysts and politicians have been attending seminars and workshops across the country to discuss the replacement of the country’s constitution which was written back in 1990.

According to political analyst Abdulghani al-Iriani, substantial changes in Yemen’s governmental structure “will most likely produce a new constitution that will be put to referendum before the elections of 2014.”

Lawyers and experts say Yemen’s current constitution gives the president too much power, while revolutionaries argue that it was written for the political elite.

Meanwhile, the Houthi group of the country’s northern Sa’ada Province has also agreed to join the talks.

The developments come months after Saleh formally stepped down and handed over power to Vice President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi in February 2012. The power transfer occurred under a Saudi-backed deal brokered by the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council in April 2011 and signed by Saleh in Riyadh on November 23, 2011.

Since January 2011, Yemenis have held numerous demonstrations across the nation to call for political restructuring of the country and to demand the dismissal of members of Saleh’s regime from their government posts.
