In July of 1944, an American TBM-1C Avenger bomber went down in the Pacific Ocean. The crew and the plane were never found.
72 years later, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego has announced that they’ve found the remains of the plane.
According to Eric Terrill, an oceanographer at Scripps, they found the plane 85 feet below water in a lagoon. The lagoon was located near Palau, in the Pacific Ocean.
According to Terrill, “The plane had a number of Japanese targets that it was focused on in World War II, and was hit by anti-aircraft fire, and then crashed within the lagoon a few miles overshore from the target that it was going after.”
Aboard each Avenger was a crew of three. Unfortunately, when the plane went missing, so did its three crew members.
The find was made by Project RECOVER a group devoted to finding lost American wrecks. They do this by checking historical records and then beginning their searches.
The ultimate goal is to help families whose members went MIA (missing in action). If they are able to discover the wrecks, and potentially the human remains, they can help alleviate a bit of stress from family members.
