Wreckage of Russian plane found

Russia’s first post-Soviet civilian jet took off from an airport in Jakarta on Wednesday to do a demonstration flight but it vanished from radar screens 50 minutes later.

Indonesian officials said on Thursday that the wreckage was located on the side of a cliff on Mount Salak in the country’s West Java province.

“The Sukhoi has been found just now,” said Ketut Parwa, search and rescue agency chief for Jakarta.

“There is debris spotted by the helicopter, (we have) confirmed it is from the Sukhoi,” he said.

Although there is no information about the fate of passengers of the plane, rescue teams are trying to find the missing people.

“An investigation must be carried out immediately and thoroughly. Search and rescue operations must prioritize finding any survivors,” said Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Eight Russian pilots and technicians, Russian Embassy officials, Indonesian airline representatives as well as journalists were among those said to be on board the twin-engine Superjet 100.

The new passenger aircraft, which is a joint venture between Russia’s Sukhoi and Italy’s Alenia Aeronautica, made its first commercial flight last year.

The demonstration flight in Indonesia was part of an Asian tour to promote the aircraft which is crucial to Russia’s hopes of becoming a major player in the modern aviation market.

The plane had been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan, and was due to visit Laos and Vietnam after Indonesia.
