World Awakening Award winners named

Photojournalist Hossein Fatemi and cartoonist Homayoun Mahmoudi received the cash prize of €10,000 during a ceremony held at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts.

Fatemi has extensively photographed in Lebanon, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Georgia, Russia, India and Afghanistan. He was selected as Iran’s Photojournalist of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2009.

Fatemi has also documented war scenes in Georgia, Afghanistan and Lebanon and worked with the United Press International (UPI), Fars News Agency, Zuma Press, EPA (European Pressphoto Agency) and the Associated Press.

His photographs have won numerous international awards and widely published in the world’s best-known magazines and newspapers including Time Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post and Paris Mach.

Lex Drewinski from Germany ranked second in the photo category with the other awards going to Mahmoud Bazdar (Iran), David Monteleone (Italy), Ashley Gilbertson (US) and Ivor Prickett (Ireland).

Ali Miraii and Mohsen Asadi from Iran, Galym Boranbayev from Kazakhstan and Armen Hamonangan from Indonesia were awarded in the cartoon category.

Sebastian Kubica (Poland), Adam Klasa (Poland), Saeid Sheikhbeiglou (Iran) and Morteza Rahmati (Iran) won the awards in the poster category.

The award ceremony was attended by the Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini and the jury members Michel Setboun (France), Shahidul Alam (Bangladesh), Kambiz Derambakhsh (Iran) and Bahram Azimi (Iran).

An exhibition of participating works from 55 countries has been held at the Imam Ali (PBUH) Museum of Arts and will run until June 20, 2012.
