PETER CAVE: One of the paramedics who saved the life of a woman who’d been trapped in a car accident for three days says he’s surprised she survived.
The 45-year-old Deborah McKnight was on her way home from visiting relatives on Christmas Day when her car rolled down an embankment and ended up on its roof near the town of Tumut, in southern New South Wales.
Her leg was amputated yesterday. One of the three paramedics who helped to release Ms McKnight is Tumut Mayor, John Larter.
He spoke to Hagar Cohen.
JOHN LARTER: She allegedly had to have a portion of her leg removed, amputated in surgery. So it’s a very nasty outcome but she’s very fortunate to be alive.
HAGAR COHEN: What was she like when you first found her?
JOHN LARTER: She was fully conscious but given the state the car was in it was pretty banged up and she’d obviously gone off the road down a pretty steep embankment, probably eight to 10 metres in the car ended up on its roof.
And I mean the impact alone was significant enough to cause a severe amount of trauma to anyone.
HAGAR COHEN: Tell me about her physical condition at the time. I mean were you surprised that she survived this?
JOHN LARTER: Yeah very surprised that she survived it because you know, the impact was severe, the mechanism was very high and the potential for a life threatening injury was certainly significant.
HAGAR COHEN: Did she talk to you at all and what did she say?
JOHN LARTER: Look she was basically just glad to see us, glad that the three days of being on her own was over and that we were there to get her out and she had confidence that we were going to do that.
She was in some pain so we obviously remedied that and yeah, we just talked her through cutting her out of the wreckage and what was going to happen but she was concerned about her family and grandchildren et cetera.
PETER CAVE: The Tumut Mayor and paramedic John Larter, with Hagar Cohen.
