A French student has been stabbed in the arm while fighting off an attacker on a Melbourne street.
The 26-year-old woman was walking along Brunswick Street in Fitzroy North, in the city’s northeast, when a man approached her from behind and grabbed her left arm.
A struggled ensued and the woman hit the attacker, aged in his late 30s to early 40s, several times in the face before he let go.
The man fled the scene following the attack, around 4.20am (AEDT) on Monday.
The woman realised she had received a deep cut to her right arm and screamed for help.
A local resident came to her aid and she was taken to St Vincents Hospital with serious injuries.
She received eight stitches to her arm.
Her attacker is described as Caucasian with a thin build and short blonde hair.
