A head-on collision between two cars near Perth Airport has left a 40-year-old woman dead and six people injured.
It is Western Australia’s first road fatality for the new year.
The cars collided last night on Dunreath Drive, a link road between the domestic and international airports.
Police say the crash occurred on a slight bend with double white lines, but it appears one car was attempting to overtake a slow-moving truck at the time.
Police say one car burst into flames on impact.
Another six people from both cars were taken to hospital.
The death took the state’s road toll for the Christmas holiday period to seven.
But Western Australia recorded its lowest road toll in five years in 2011.
The road toll in 2011 was 179, down 14 deaths from 193 in 2010.
The RAC’s Matt Brown says despite the drop, motorists and police need to remain vigilant to bring the toll down further.
He says WA needs to employ the techniques of other states which have successfully reduced the number of people killed on the roads.
“Western Australia has lagged behind the other states,” Mr Brown said.
“We need to look at what they’re doing to get their road toll down and we need to copy those efforts.
“We need to invest money, we need more police on our roads and we need drivers to accept responsibility for their own actions.”
