It is not unusual to hear of big name celebrities and entrepreneurs bequeathing some of their fortune to causes they believe in. The story that follows however, proves that one doesn’t need to be famous or a billionaire to make a world of difference in their community, or for those who don’t have a voice of their own.
Glenda Taylor DeLawder grew up and lived in her hometown of Elizabethton, Tennessee. She graduated from the local high school in 1961 and worked as a phone operator for AT&T in the big city of Washington D.C. Those who knew Glenda knew her avid love for animals which showed not only in the many cats and dogs she owned as pets, but also through the donations she made throughout her life to support animal charities.
When Glenda passed in November of 2015 she was a widow of 72. To her family and friends, her passing came with sadness and also a very big surprise!
In her will, Glenda had left her entire $1.2 million estate to the Elizabethton Carter County Animal Shelter. The bequest was announced by Major Leon Humphrey on Christmas Day 2016 on the shelter’s Facebook page. In his message Mayor Humphrey said,
“December 25th is a day that many people celebrate Christmas and give thanks for the year past. As families and friends gather together in fellowship and exchange gifts, many families include their beloved pets in their celebrations. Many people treat and love their pets like children and many people who don’t have children consider their pets their children. One Carter County Citizen exemplified this love, the late Glenda Taylor DeLawder. Mrs. DeLawder so loved cats and dogs that she left her estate, $1.2 million to be used exclusively to help care for Carter County’s cats and dogs.”
For the animal shelter, this is the largest such gift of it’s kind in the history of their existence. And proving that Glenda was no stranger to the shelter’s current state, is her specific instructions on how most of the money shall be used.
Her wills gifts $540,00 for a new 1,002-square-foot masonry block addition to the shelter which will also include 1,234 square feet of outdoor sidewalks and slabs. Additionally funds will be used to purchase a Ford Transit 350 van with a high roof which then will be converted with specifications that can efficiently transport several dogs or cats.
Major Humphrey ended his announcement with a big thanks to Glenda and The DeLawder family,
“Mrs. DeLawder’s family asked me to share with you that she loved her cats and dogs so very much and wanted her love and care of them to be her everlasting gift. I think Mrs. DeLawder would be very pleased that her gift will be able to provide for future cats and dogs at the shelter for as long as the shelter exists.”
Sometimes the predetermined acts of those who have passed seem to speak just as loud as their acts when they were alive. Glenda was one such woman. She not only made her love for the animals known when she was alive, but also made sure that her commitment to their well being outlasted her time on Earth.
