Woman dies in head-on crash

A woman in her 70s died and another three people were injured in a head-on collision in Mentone today.

The 78-year-old driver of a Ford sedan is believed to have lost control of his car, which crossed the median strip and collided with a Nissan four-wheel-drive at the Nepean Highway and Warrigal Road intersection at 3.47pm.

An off-duty paramedic alerted emergency services but the woman was already dead when paramedics arrived.

The 78-year-old driver sustained chest injuries and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

The 20-year-old woman in the other car received bruising and grazing across her chest and was taken to the Monash Medical Centre in a stable condition.

Her 54-year-old mother was taken to The Alfred hospital with chest pains. She was in a stable condition last night.

The national road toll over the holiday period, which ends at midnight, is 47.
