Woman bashed to death in Qld

A woman has been bashed to death on a footpath in Brisbane’s north, police say.

Detective Superintendent Mark Ainsworth says officers were called to a disturbance on a path behind houses in Danube Drive at Strathpine about 9.30am (AEST) on Wednesday.

Police have detained a 27-year-old man, at the scene, who is yet to be charged.

The woman died in hospital about 90 minutes after the incident.

Supt Ainsworth says the woman is yet to be identified but probably knew her attacker.

When police arrived in the street, they also found a stolen black Toyota four wheel drive ute that ran down two officers at Lawnton in Brisbane’s north on Tuesday.

Supt Ainsworth said it was too early to say whether the two incidents are linked.

The hit-and-run happened only a few hundred metres from the crime scene, he said.

“At this stage, it’s too early to confirm whether there’s a connection between that matter and the people wanted for that vehicle and this matter this morning,” he said.

Police are yet to charge anyone over the incident, which saw a driver run down two officers, prompting them to open fire.

The vehicle was originally stolen from Cedar Creek, in the Gold Coast hinterland, two weeks ago.

Supt Ainsworth said the woman bashed on Wednesday was believed to be aged between 40 and 50.

A small metal bar found at the crime scene may have been used in the attack.

Police divers will search a nearby creek for another weapon.

“It was an extremely brutal attack,” Supt Ainsworth said.

“There was a disturbance in the form of loud shouting and a female screaming.”

Supt Ainsworth said the man arrested sustained a minor head injury.

He was being treated at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.
