Woman arrested after seven-month-old baby found abandoned behind Manitoba school

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. – A woman faces a charge of child abandonment after a seven-month-old baby was found behind a school in Manitoba.

RCMP say a man on a bicycle was returning from work in Portage la Prairie early Saturday morning when he heard a noise that sounded like a cat.

He found a baby girl lying in some leaves beside the steps of the school.

The baby was dressed only in a sleeper, so the man covered the child with his jacket until help arrived.

The baby was taken to hospital and treated for exposure to the cold.

Police say officers patrolled the area and found an abandoned baby carriage and an intoxicated 28-year-old who turned out to be the mother.

She has been released from custody and is to appear in provincial court at a later date. She also faces a charge of failing to provide the necessities of life.

Police say she will not be named to protect the identity of the infant.
