The time period and setting is such a crucial aspect of any Assassin’s Creed game, and with Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, this setting is no different.
But why go with the pirate theme now? Why did Ubisoft decide to take the franchise in this direction when they just introduced the American Revolution a year ago? The answer is relatively simple.
In an exclusive interview with Examiner, Jean Guesdon, who is the creative director of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, revealed why the pirate setting is justified for Assassin’s Creed 4.
“Back in 2011, when it was the time to start the 2013 project, we already had in our hands the first draft of AC3‘s naval experience and that was what convinced us that we really needed to do a pirate game.
“We realized that we had all what was needed to deliver a true, brutal, realistic pirate experience. We knew how to build cities of course, but also natural environments and the sea warfare. We were ready. And after doing some initial historical research we found out that the beginning of the 18th century in the Caribbean was indeed the perfect setting.
“In Black Flag you will meet and spend some time with the most incredible pirates of all time with Black Beard, Calico Jack Rackham, Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold and a lot more,” Guesdon said.
If Assassin’s Creed 4 ends up being the hit that many installments have been before it, then hopefully we’ll be seeing some additional installments under this setting. The world is gorgeous and really is unlike anything fans have seen in previous Assassin’s Creed iterations.
We’ll all become pirates when Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag hits retailers on Oct. 30th. For all of our latest exclusives, previews, reviews and features, follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. Game On.
