Why Did This Feisty 103 Year Old Woman Get Kicked Out Of Her Church?

Blaze and Spitfire AMERICA’S FREEDOM FIGHTERS –

A 103 year old woman was kicked out of her church that she has attended since she was 11, because she disagreed with the pastor on the way he conducted his service.

The job of a pastor or a priest of a church is to be there for their people as a “shepherd,” or however one would like to interpret. That person is for the people, not themselves. If they want to remove people from their congregation, that is not for them to decide, it is for the people of the congregation to decide.

ABC– Genora Hamm Biggs joined Union Grove Baptist Church in Elberton, Georgia, when she was just 11 years old and now, almost a century later, she was told she was “not to come back to the church, not even on the ground,” she told ABC News today.

She and the Rev. Timothy Mattox have disagreed on his way of preaching since he was hired six years ago, she said, but their problems came to a head when he put out a motion to remove her from the church the first Sunday of August. This motion came after she and some other members held a church business meeting where she voiced her concerns about him not answering or returning her phone calls.

“We tried to get him away but he’s determined to stay. After that motion was made, the next week I got his certified letter saying I was not to come back.” Biggs said. “I was sad and unhappy. Very unhappy.”

The letter states:

“Dear Mrs. Genora Hamm Biggs,
This letter is to inform you that according to the by-laws of the Union Grove Baptist Church, and by vote of the active members, any membership or associations that you have had with this church are now officially revoked. Therefore, you cannot attend Union Grove Baptist Church for any reason whatsoever. You are not to come to the property of the Union Grove Baptist Church located at 680 Pulliam Street, Elberton, Georgia 30635.

Sincerely
The members and officers of the Union Grove Baptist Church.”

Biggs did not like the way Mattox’s service was “different than the real Baptist [traditions],” but she went back to church after being banned along with other long-time members who also received letters, she said.

Mattox threatened to have her and the other members escorted out, she said, but they refused to leave. When police declined to get involved in the dispute, she said, he cancelled the service.

“The lights went out while we were sitting there. Finally we got up and filed our way out and we left. But they went back in there after we left and started the service,” she said of some remaining congregation members and the pastor.

Although Biggs said about 20 long-time members have left the congregation, including a deacon who was told by the pastor he would go to jail if he came back to church, she has been going back, she said.

A pastor is a man of God, but he is also an employee of the church. She mentioned that she along with others felt he had strayed from their line of faith in the way he preached and presented his sermons. This is a Baptist church. The pastor is preaching a “holiness” or Pentecostal type sermon, complete with “hollering and rolling on the floor.” The pastor needs to find a Pentecostal or Assembly of God church. Baptists don’t believe in the charismatic way of worship. It’s a fundamental difference in denomination. She is in the correct one for her beliefs; he’s not.

This guy seems like a self-serving jerk. Older members of a congregation should not be ignored, regardless of their perhaps “outdated” ideas, they are valuable members of our society, who have lived much more life than the rest of us.
