WHO suspends polio vaccinations in Karachi

“We had a successful campaign in Karachi until those attacks,” said Elias
Durry, senior WHO coordinator for polio vaccination in southern Sindh
province.

He added that 2.2 million children had been targeted in the city but that but
22,000 children in Gadap town could not be vaccinated because of security
fears.

Karachi is a key battleground in efforts to rid the world of polio. The
sprawling megacity is home to hundreds of thousands of refugees from
Afghanistan and many more economic migrants from the north-west of Pakistan.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only three countries where the virus
remains endemic.

However, the number of cases in Pakistan is far lower than last year, which
recorded 198 in total but health officials fear the incidence will increase
if their work continues to be hampered.
