That code, a turn-of-the-century cryptograph scribbled on a piece of paper, was quickly solved: it promised a rendezvous at a specific location on July 19.

Since the guy he gave the code had changed the rules, the decoded message said, so would he — and he promised a much earlier rendezvous with a “blue jay” on 6 1/2 Ave in Manhattan Thursday.

(Yes, there really is a 6 1/2 Ave, as Harry Potter-ish as that sounds. Our Manhattan-based editors were as surprised as you.)

At the appointed hour, , waited. A few suspected “blue jays” approached, but departed, perplexed by the crowd.

Finally, the recipient of the message arrived, as saddened as the other mystery hunters that no blue jay showed (or stayed). On this first meeting, at least, he appeared to be in earnest about the whole affair.

“I do think it might be marketing,” Ali — he wouldn’t give his last name — told Mashable. “What I can assure you is that I’m not in on it.”

Presuming he is telling the truth, then, the big question remains: who was the original “Mr. Input” on the subway? Several notions have been floating around Reddit these past few days — so let’s do a little crowdsourcing on the most likely answer.

Take our poll, and let us know in the comments what you think the real story is here.
