Many of you will say that I write too much about Tesla. Well, maybe. But point me to another company that is making as many people excited about dumping gasoline cars and doing so many interesting things almost every week in the field of electric cars, and I’ll cover them too for sure. Don’t get me wrong: The greenest way to get around is to walk, bike, or take transit. But whether we want it or not, there will be hundreds of millions of cars on the road for the foreseeable future – especially outside of big cities where everything is close-by and transit infrastructure is decent – and I think that those cars should be electric. That makes a huge difference, as all the life-cycle analysis studies show (and they’ll keep getting better as we clean up our power grid, unlike gasoline cars).
That’s why I think it’s great that Tesla is helping the general public and other automakers step on the gas (figuratively) and accelerate the EV revolution. Whatever happens to the company, whether they can make the transition to less expensive vehicles with the Model 3 or not, they’re a catalyst that has saved us a lot of time by speeding up progress, and thus helped avoid many millions of barrels of oil being burned in cars.
Anyway, enough of that. Here’s what I wanted to show you:
Consumer Reports has already said that the Model S was the “best car we’ve ever driven” and given it 99/100, and a survey of Model S owners has also topped the Consumer Reports charts two years in a row.
But after reviewing the regular version, they kept getting requests for a review of the new P85D, which is the Performance version with dual motors, providing all-wheel drive. That’s the one that is so quick that flooring it in “insane” mode feels like a punch to the face (or a roller coaster, as these ladies put it).
The video above shows that CR has bought a P85D, and we get to see their first few laps around the track. The look on that journalist’s face doesn’t lie.
And he’s not the only one who’s excited about the Model S. Here’s a tweet by best-selling horror author Stephen King:
Took my Tesla out to a dragstrip last week and ran the 1/4 mile. 112 MPH, 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. Like driving an X-Wing fighter.

For those of you who aren’t Star Wars geek, the X-Wing is the small fighting spacecraft that is used by the rebels in the movie (shown above in lego version).
While we’re at it, here’s the roller coaster ride mentioned above:
