What makes the god Odin such a fascinating subject? Here is another interesting video by the Survive The Jive YouTube channel which has been recently published on the subject of Odin. The author makes a scholarly expose on the literary origins, etymology and intrinsic meaning of the deity. One of the main things that catches my attention is the fact that Odin should not be considered only a god as such but ‘a means to God’ (or a means to divinity), as the author states. The comparison between Odin and Jesus Christ are more than just apparent. We have to remember Odin was the Man-God who hang (crucified) himself to a tree, pierced himself with a spear and was claimed to be the direct ancestor of the first English kings (even during early Christian times). Whatever the case might be, Odin/Woden/Wotan seems to appear in many guises, a feature that makes him a particular case of study within the European pantheon of pre-Christian gods. The quasi-Promethean nature of his archetype as bringer of knowledge (light) through the runes, and his close relationship with men from different places all over Europe makes him almost like a unifying force for European Pagan revival, hence the name ‘Odinism’.
One of the reasons why I titled the commentary on this video ‘What Is Odin’ comes from the fact that Odin, in his/its many forms, can also symbolize a state of higher spirituality, also of sheer creative inspiration, both related to altered states of consciousness. In my opinion the portrait that is given of the God in contemporary imagery can come as a bit constrained, limiting the more sophisticated and versatile view this particular archetype/deity might present. God-King, God-Shaman, messenger of the Gods, wanderer, traveler of multiple dimensions between gods and men, these are many of the guises by which Odin can manifest himself to us.
But these are all my musings. I leave the readers with the video itself so they can get to their own personal conclusions.
