They are supposed to be on the roads to prevent accidents from happening.

But rather than protecting other vehicles from the cold conditions, one unfortunate gritter became the victim of the ice itself – leaving it embedded in a front garden.

The Highland Council gritter hit black ice and skidded down a hill.

Audrey Barnett, 40, was woken by the noise and found the vehicle in her newly-laid front garden at her Inverness home.

‘I heard a loud bang, and thought, this sounds close. I looked out of the window and there was a snow plough sitting in my garden,’ she said.

‘It had bashed into my next door neighbour’s car, then through the dividing fence and completely taken out the top half of my garden.

‘I could see two shocked men in the plough. They opened the doors, and the driver got out and fell on the ice before they came over.’

Mrs Barnett, from Balloch, said: ‘It was just me in the house, but they did their best to help and gave me a number to call, reversed the plough and left.’

Highland Council officials visited her house on Tuesday and confirmed they will rebuild the garden.

A council spokesman said: ‘We deeply regret the accidental damage caused in this incident when our gritter skidded on the black ice.

‘The damage to the garden will be made good.

‘Underwood Place was treated on Monday, as were the majority of residential roads in the area.’

Mrs Barnett, who has multiple sclerosis, said: ‘It could have been a lot worse.

‘My husband organised the garden a few months ago to make it easier for me to manage, which certainly isn’t the case now, but I am glad my wishing well survived untouched!

‘When the men came out of the lorry, we tried to make light of it, because it was the only way we could think to deal with what had happened.

‘Keeping my humour is one of the ways I deal with my MS.’

A neighbour’s car was also struck and damaged by the gritter.

The car was at the home of Mrs Barnett’s neighbour, mother-of-three Rebecca Huxtable-Smith, 33, who had borrowed it from her sister.

‘I was sound asleep when it hit, and it was my son George who ran through and said: “There’s a lorry stuck in the garden”, so he must have heard the bang.

‘I was shocked, but not surprised that it happened, as the pavements are so icy.’

The crew of the gritter was unhurt.

P’haps they should spead in reverse, Or wait for me to patent a front spreader.?? or tyre studs. Glad no-one hurt.

This illustrates the danger faced by the workers who try to keep our traffic moving and they deserve our praise and thanks.

Demolished a wall AND damaged a car borrowed by the neighbour. Talk about rubbing salt in a wound.

NOT COOL, totally not cool – Maybe the gritters should spray a little GRIT IN FRONT of the lorry as well as behind it!?
