‘West sanctions to cover military losses’

Speaking at a parliament session on Wednesday, Ali Larijani said the United States and its Western allies backed the regime of executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in its military offensive against Iran in the1980s, but failed to undermine the Islamic Republic.

The Western powers’ war rhetoric through media outlets “reflects their political and psychological frustration,” caused by the Iranian nation’s response to their arrogant military measures during the eight-year war, he stated.

He also criticized the West for mounting pressure on Iran in recent years over the accusations of human rights violations and its nuclear energy program, “through the adventurism they pursue today in the name of sanctions.”

“Their perspective is merely based on taking advantage of the instrumental powers of international institutions, and [they] neither care about democracy, nor human rights, nor regional security,” Larijani explained.

He further pointed to the “wicked behavior and miscalculations” of major powers and regional governments in backing Saddam’s 1980 invasion of Iran, saying the arrogant powers now should know better that they are facing a “resistant, steadfast, and principled nation that would not bow to bullying and pressure, but rather seeks to create an atmosphere of peace, coexistence, and permanent security in the region.”

Larijani made the remarks after the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei clarified that Iran will counter the enemy pressure and will adopt a “resistant economy” to deal with the US-engineered sanctions against the country.
