‘West must interact with Iran in talks’

“Instead of the policy of confrontation against Iran, the West must pursue the policy of interaction in Baghdad talks,” Chairman of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Alaeddin Boroujerdi told reporters on Sunday.

He stressed that Iran seeks peaceful nuclear activities and stated, “Talks between Iran and the P5+1 –Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany–in Baghdad will be in continuation of the Istanbul meeting.”

Despite international pressure and repeated resolutions and sanctions, Iran would never give up its right to achieve nuclear energy, the lawmaker added.

Boroujerdi said Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano’s visit to Tehran would take place with the purpose of holding talks with Iranian officials and in line with bilateral cooperation.

He noted that the outcomes of Amano’s visit would play an effective role in the Baghdad meeting.

On Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the IAEA chief would travel to Tehran to discuss the cooperation between the UN nuclear agency and the Islamic Republic.

Amano’s visit comes ahead of the May 23 talks between Iran and the P5+1 in Baghdad.

The latest round of the talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.
