‘West balanced stance needed for talks’

“The West’s balanced approach and its emphasis on the recognition of Iran’s nuclear rights can help maintain the positive atmosphere of the Istanbul talks in Baghdad as well,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said at a meeting with his South African counterpart Ibrahim Ismaeel in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The Iranian diplomat was making reference to the upcoming round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 – permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany — in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on May 23.

The two sides wrapped up the first round of their latest negotiations on April 14 in the Turkish city of Istanbul. Both sides hailed the talks as constructive.

Abdollahian, who heads a top diplomatic delegation, is on a trip to South Africa to submit Iran’s invitation to the country’s President Jacob Zuma for attending the upcoming meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which is set to be convened in the Iranian capital, Tehran, in September.

The Iranian envoy and Ismaeel also discussed the two sides’ diplomatic and economic ties and exchanged views on the latest international developments.

Ismaeel, for his part, described the efforts by Tehran-Pretoria joint diplomatic commission as a constructive step for enhancement of the two countries’ bilateral ties.
