“The West seeks to apply political pressure and propaganda against Syria to dismantle one of the legitimate resistance columns against the aggressive policies of the Zionist regime through collaboration with some of the region’s reactionary countries,” said Larijani on Wednesday during a meeting in Tehran with visiting Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Omar Ghalawanji and his accompanying delegation.
In response to Ghalawanji’s gratitude for Iran’s unwavering support for Syria since its foreign-sponsored unrest began in 2011, Larijani referred to Syria as a friendly state, adding that the Islamic Republic “regards its support for the Syrian government and people against foreign plots and domestic terrorists as a humane obligation.”
The top Iranian legislator also underlined that Syria must be provided with adequate opportunity to implement its reforms.
For his part, the visiting Syrian official pointed to foreign conspiracies by the country’s enemies in promoting unrest and terrorist acts in Syria and stressed that enemies of the state, “led by the US and some of its regional collaborators, aim to undermine the resistance line against the Zionist regime in the region.”
“However, with the resistance of the people and the country’s current authorities, this conspiracy will also be thwarted like previous plots,” Ghalawanji added.
The Syrian official also reiterated that expanding sanctions and economic embargo against Syria serves as a precursor for further weakening the country in the attempt to ultimately “take out one of the key enemies of the US and the Zionist regime in the important Middle East region.”
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.
Iran maintains that negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition groups constitute the best solution for the country’s lingering crisis.
The Islamic Republic has also reiterated its readiness to facilitate talks between the two sides.
