Diet program Weight Watchers, professional networking site LinkedIn and online shopping site La Redoute were among the Google searches with the most significant increase in growth around the world over the seven days prior to January 9, according to data from Google Insights.
International weight loss and dietary scheme Weight Watchers experienced worldwide growth of 100 percent, with the majority of inquiries originating in the United States, Ireland, Canada, Germany and the UK.
The popularity of the search term “Weight Watchers” was most likely driven by the launch of the new “Play to Win” campaign (http://www.playweightwatchers.co.uk/) in early January, which essentially rewards users with points for completing tasks such as exercising. The dietary regime also received a lot of positive attention earlier this month when American online magazine US News and World Report ranked the diet as the “easiest to follow,” followed by the Jenny Craig Diet and the Mediterranean Diet, in the site’s diet report.
French online shopping site La Redoute was also a popular search around the world over the last seven days after the brand scored an accidental, and unwanted, viral hit with its children’s clothing catalog. The incident occurred on January 4 when the retailer published its online catalog featuring an image of four young children running along the beach and a completely naked man in the sea behind the children.
The image quickly went viral and attracted international media attention from outlets ranging from BBC News to The Huffington Post. The image has since been removed and La Redoute issued an apology via Twitter.
The fastest-growing search term over the past seven days, “Azer Bulbul,” is the name of a popular Turkish musician who was found dead in his hotel room over the weekend in Antalya in southwestern Turkey. The second most popular search term, “Santorum,” relates to former US Senator Rick Santorum, who is currently competing with Mitt Romney to be the Republican candidate to challenge current US President Barack Obama.
Smartphone messaging application “Kik” came in third place, followed by the Japanese term “箱根駅伝,” or “Hakone Ekiden,” the marathon relay races held between students in Tokyo and Hakone on January 2-3 and broadcast on Japanese TV.
“FAFSA,” the fifth fastest-growing search term of the previous seven days, stands for Free Application of Federal Student Aid, an application for financial assistance submitted to the government by US university students from January 1 each year. UK weather service “Met Office,” “Carnaval 2012” — referring to this year’s Carnival in Rio, held February 18-21 — and professional networking site LinkedIn were also popular searches.
