Weekend Rainfall Causes Flash Floods In Southern Israel, Dozens Said Rescued

Rainfall on Saturday caused flash floods in the Dead Sea and Arava areas of southern Israel, requiring emergency services to rescue hikers stranded by the flooding.

Due to the floods, police closed a portion of Route 90 along the Dead Sea to traffic in both directions.

The nearby Ein Gedi nature reserve was also closed to visitors as a result of the floods.

In total, dozens of people were rescued from the flooding despite warnings of flash floods and the closure of hiking trails ahead of time, the Ynet news site said.

The Magen David Adom ambulance service said paramedics rescued a motorcycle driver suffering from hypothermia after he got caught in flooding along the road between Beersheba and Hatzerim. Paramedics also rescued a couple whose car became stuck in the Tze’elim stream.

Also Saturday, snowfall was recorded at Mount Hermon in the north, as the rainfall was accompanied by a drop in temperatures.

The Israel Meteorological Service said further rain was expected Saturday night along the Mediterranean coast and forecast possible rain on Sunday in mountainous areas of the north and centre of the country. It warned of flooding in the Judean Desert and Arava and said temperatures would remain below the seasonal average, but were expected to rise on Monday and Tuesday.
