A New Zealand man found dead at an apartment block on the Gold
Coast had been assaulted with a weapon, police say.
Tony Williams, 38, was found dead by friends at his unit in a
complex on Sunshine Boulevard shortly before 2pm on Saturday.
Williams, who is of Maori descent, was believed to be from
Tauranga.
He was believed to have died on Friday afternoon, Gold Coast
Detective Superintendent Dave Hutchinson told media today.
A post-mortem revealed Williams had suffered injuries to his
head and body from being struck with a weapon, but police were yet
to establish the type of weapon.
Police were appealing for the public’s assistance, and asked
anyone who saw anything suspicious on Friday morning or afternoon
to come forward.
“At this stage, we have statements from a number of witnesses
but we have nobody that’s actually heard the disturbance,”
Hutchinson says.
“We don’t have a motive. We’re keeping all our options
open.”
There was no sign of forced entry, but it was too soon to say
whether Mr Williams knew his attacker, Hutchinson says.
Williams lived alone.
Friends discovered his body when they went to visit him, after
he failed to turn up to play a regular gig on Thursday evening,
Hutchinson says.
Williams was a singer in three-piece band Sex ‘N’ Chocolate,
which played every Thursday night at a local nightclub,
Goldcoast.com.au reports.
A friend, Jackson Douglas, paid tribute on the group’s MySpace
page.
“Just heard the news about tonys death and i’m shell shocked, i
knew tony from the jiggy house days (sic),” he wrote.
