Two senior water managers who claim Wivenhoe dam engineers did not implement the proper water release strategies, are expected to front Queensland’s flood inquiry on Tuesday.
The Floods Commission of Inquiry is holding extra hearings in Brisbane to investigate allegations four engineers botched water releases from Wivenhoe, caused unnecessary flooding and misled the inquiry over what water release strategies were used.
South East Queensland Water Grid Manager’s chief executive Barry Dennien and director of operations Dan Spiller have been listed as witnesses for Tuesday’s hearing.
Both have submitted new statements that say Seqwater took two days longer than it should have in activating a more intense water release strategy designed to protect urban areas from flooding.
They say the engineers did not ramp up to strategy W3 until January 10, while the engineers have told the inquiry they bypassed W2 and implemented W3 on Saturday, January 8, 2011.
Seqwater’s director of dam operations Robert Drury will continue giving evidence.
Dam safety and risk consultant Leonard McDonald is also expected to take the stand.
