In a controversial move, Washington senators are moving forward with a proposal that would allow older teenagers to taste alcohol in approved college classes.
The plan was approved Thursday, March 7 by the Senate, and would permit alcohol tasting for students enrolled in culinary, beer technology or similar programs. For the students who are enrolled in the class, they must be at least 18 years of age and supervised by faculty or staff at the community or technical college. The decision is designed for students to taste but not consume the alcohol.
Supporters of this measure say the proposal would improve the educational programs for students and help them learn about the ingredient and the industry.
Democratic Sen. Jim Hargrove of Hoquiam has opposed the measure, saying he fears that the bill is the first of many that would lower drinking ages and expand access to alcohol to those under the age of 21.
The measure which began in the Senate passed 42-7 and now goes to the state House.
