Paramedics will nominate a waiter for a Community Hero Award after he dived into the Yarra to rescue a man who attempted to swim across it.
The man had jumped into the river with a friend near Federation Square and was lucky to make it across, but his friend is missing after the risky escapade at 9pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.
The man pulled from the river was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital suffering from hypothermia but is in a stable condition.
Search and Rescue, Water Police, local police units and the air wing are continuing to search for the missing man.
