WA treasurer to quit for federal seat

West Australian Treasurer and Attorney-General Christian Porter will reportedly announce his resignation on Tuesday to run for a seat in federal parliament.

Sources have told The West Australian newspaper Mr Porter plans to run for preselection for a Liberal-held seat – possibly Pearce – at next year’s federal election.

Judi Moylan, the Liberal member for Pearce since 1993, has previously announced her retirement at the next election.

A spokesperson for Mr Porter said there will be no comment until he makes a statement on Tuesday morning.

Mr Porter’s announcement will come just three weeks after he handed down his second state budget, The West Australian says.

The paper understands his decision was first raised at senior government levels on Monday during a community cabinet in Joondalup.

Both The West Australian and the ABC are reporting Mr Porter’s move is said to have left senior Liberals unimpressed.
