The West Australian government is reviewing a decision to allow Woodside Petroleum’s proposed $30 billion Kimberley gas hub, because of the weight of opposition to it.
Environment Minister Bill Marmion announced on Tuesday he had appointed former CSIRO chief executive Roy Green to review almost 250 appeals against the state’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) report recommending the Browse LNG project go ahead.
The controversial decision was left to just one man, EPA chairman Paul Vogel, after his four fellow board members abstained due to conflicts of interest.
Mr Vogel’s final recommendation contained 29 strict conditions for the development of the James Price Point site, about 60km north of Broome, including environmental, cultural and heritage measures.
The conditions include steering clear of fossilised dinosaur footprints and protecting marine life in the area.
While the EPA report is not final, the WA government will use it to make a final decision on the project.
The federal Environment Department has yet to rule on it, and Woodside has not yet made a final investment decision.
If the gas hub does go ahead, it has the potential to be the biggest LNG processing plant in the world.
Woodside has already started preliminary works for the project, which has divided the normally laid-back tourist town of Broome.
Opponents say it will disrupt their traditional way of life and destroy a site of cultural and environmental significance, while those in favour say it will bring much-needed funds and development to the region.
The Greens have said most Australians are against the gas hub, citing a recent survey which found 60 per cent opposed it.
That came after The Wilderness Society said it was considering legal action over the project’s environmental approval process.
The Greens and The Wilderness Society have labelled the process a “sham” because the EPA decision was made by just one man, Mr Vogel.
Mr Marmion said he would rule on the project once Dr Green had finished his review of the EPA appeals process.
