A Perth man who beat an elderly woman in her home with a rolled-up newspaper, causing her to choke to death on her own blood, has been sentenced to serve a minimum 15 years in prison.
Stefan Dicky Westberg, 32, previously pleaded guilty to murdering 84-year-old Krystyna Sadlowski during a botched burglary on May 1 last year.
He had kicked in a glass front door and begun to ransack the house when she disturbed him.
Westberg struck the elderly woman several times with a rolled-up newspaper, wrapped in plastic, to stop her from screaming, before fleeing.
In sentencing on Friday, Justice Ralph Simmonds said Westberg was angry that night after having a fight with his partner, with whom he had six children, and he was also drunk.
“Your anger made you dangerous,” he said.
Justice Simmonds said that while Westberg had a limited intellectual capacity, he did not have a mental illness.
He said he accepted that Westberg intended to injure the woman seriously but was not aware the blows would be deadly.
Westberg left the house believing the woman was still alive but did not call an ambulance to assist her, Justice Simmonds said.
“There is no question, this was an appalling death,” he said.
Justice Simmonds accepted that Westberg was remorseful and had empathy for his victim.
He sentenced Westberg to life in prison with a non-parole period of 15 years.
Outside court, Detective Sergeant Paul Robinson told reporters the nature of the crime was of particular concern to police and the public because the victim was an elderly woman killed in her own home.
“There are no winners in cases like this, and I would just implore anyone to think before they act, because there are consequences which could obviously affect a number of people, not only yourselves,” he said.
Det Sgt Robinson said the victim’s family lived overseas and would be informed of the sentence.
“The family are very, very traumatised with what’s happened,” he said.
“I don’t think that any sentence will help them in relation to that.
“I just hope that it can bring some closure to the family.”
Westberg’s sentence was backdated to the time of his arrest on May 3 last year.
