WA branch may pull out of national HSU

The Western Australian branch of the troubled Health Services Union (HSU) will look at ways of pulling out of the national union, which it describes as dysfunctional.

Another five branches across the country may take similar action to insulate themselves from the “dysfunction” that has taken hold of HSU East branch, and reform as a new national union, HSU WA Secretary Dan Hill told AAP.

“It has certainly been on our mind for a number of months,” he said on Wednesday.

HSU East and the national union had “spiralled downhill into dysfunctional in-fighting”, he said, adding that the moves had not been prompted by “incidences of the abuse of member funds and trust” detailed in a Fair Work Australia report into the national organisation.

The HSU WA passed a resolution to explore disaffiliation from the national union and to create a new organisation with like-minded state branches.

Mr Hill said he expected other branches across the country to pass similar resolutions soon.

He welcomed the passage of NSW legislation that would allow an administrator to be appointed to the HSU East branch.

Asked whether he believed that branch could recover from its troubles, he said: “We live in hope.”
