WA billionaires settle royalties dispute

The battle of Perth’s mining billionaires over perhaps hundreds of millions of dollars in iron ore royalties has ended with a confidential settlement.

A week before the matter was scheduled to go to court, property king Stan Perron late on Tuesday issued a brief statement saying he had agreed to settle Supreme Court proceedings begun in 2010 against Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting and fellow family dynasty Wright Prospecting.

The case centred on a 1964 agreement inked by Mr Perron, Mrs Rinehart’s late father Lang Hancock and Mr Hancock’s business partner Peter Wright regarding royalties for iron ore deposits in the Tom Price area of Western Australia that later became highly profitable mines.

Under the agreement, Mr Perron was entitled to 15 per cent of royalties from certain mines.

He later argued that a nearby mine, Brockman, should be covered under the deal.

“The parties have agreed that Mr Perron is and has always been entitled to a 15 per cent interest in the benefits and entitlements of an agreement between Hancock Prospecting, Wright Prospecting and other parties, including Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd,” Perron Group said in the statement.

“Those benefits and entitlements include the payment of royalties in relation to certain mines in the Pilbara region including the Mt Tom Price mines (which include the Western Turner Syncline mine) and the Brockman mines.”
