VW, Eminem, Jennifer Aniston

In its continuing recap of the year in online video, YouTube on December 21 named VW‘s commercial “The Force” as the most watched ad on YouTube in 2011. Chrysler‘s “Imported from Detroit” starring Eminem was also popular, as was T-Mobile‘s “Royal Wedding” and Jennifer Aniston‘s effort for Smartwater.

Several of the ads were created specifically to build buzz before or during some of this year’s biggest televised events. For example, two of the top ten, VW’s “The Force” and Chrysler’s “Imported from Detroit,” were created for this year’s Super Bowl, which took place on February 6; and T-Mobile’s “Royal Wedding” was created for the marriage of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, which took place in London on April 29.

Another popular category of YouTube ads in 2011 was for high-tech products, specifically smartphones, with Apple’s “Introducing Siri on iPhone 4S” and Samsung’s “Unleash Your Fingers” both appearing in the top ten most-watched YouTube video ads of the past year.  

Old Spice, which ran a successful viral video and social media campaign starring Isaiah Mustafa in 2010, saw a continued success in 2011, with its “Scent Vacation” ad making number seven on YouTube’s chart with over seven million views.

YouTube revealed on December 20 that overall, excluding videos from major music labels, singer Rebecca Black’s leaked vanity single “Friday” was the most-watched YouTube video of 2011. According to a separate recap released by Google on December 15, the young singer was also the fastest-rising search trend for 2011.
