nsnbc : A court in the Ecuadorian capital Quito has paved the way for a criminal trial against Vice-President Jurge Glas for an alleged corruption plot involving the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.
A judge with Ecuador’s National Justice Court announced Tuesday that Vice-President Jorge Glas and 12 other defendants should be tried an would face up to five years in jail if convicted.
Jorge Glas was jailed in early October 2017 after the Supreme Court had ordered him detained while being investigated for allegedly taking bribes from Odebrecht.
Corruption scandals involving Odebrecht and government officials have swept across Latin America involving among others Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
Vice-President Glas has denied ever receiving any money from Odebrecht and refuses to give up his post. He is the latest high-ranking government official in Latin America to come under scrutiny for purportedly taking bribes or illegal campaign contributions as part of Odebrecht’s rapid expansion in the region.
