Voters believe economy heading right way

A growing number of voters believe the economy is heading in the right direction but more people are concerned about their jobs, a new survey has found.

The Essential Research weekly online poll found 43 per cent of respondents believe the economy is heading the right direction, up from 36 per cent when the question was last asked in March.

Those who believe the economy is on the wrong path shrunk to 32 per cent, from 41 per cent.

However, the survey of 1028 respondents also found a total 56 per cent are concerned they, or members of their family, will lose their jobs in the next year, up from 49 per cent.

Asked which political party they trust the most to handle a series of issues, Liberals were ahead on most including the management of the economy, controlling interest rates, political leadership, and security and the war on terrorism.

There was little difference between the Liberals and Labor on who ensures a quality education for children, while the government was ahead on offering the fairest industrial relations system.

The Greens were ahead on protecting the environment and climate change.

Asked who could be most was relied on to act in the community’s interest, former prime minister and foreign minister Kevin Rudd topped the list at the most trusted at 37 per cent, but also had a no trust vote of 56 per cent.

Shadow communications minister and former opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull had a trustworthy rating of 33 per cent and a no trust rating of 54 per cent.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott scored 29/63 per cent on a trust/no trust rating, just pipping Prime Minister Julia Gillard on 26/67 per cent.

Mining magnates like Clive Palmer and Gina Rinehart were rated at 14/73 per cent.

Among entities, Australian companies outside of the bank industry were the most trusted overall with a rating of 46/47 per cent,

Banks scored 17/66 per cent and foreign companies eight/81 per cent.
