VMI head wrestling coach Trudgeon accepts athletic department position

John Trudgeon, head wrestling coach for the past 28 years at the Virginia Military Institute, has accepted an administrative position within the athletic department, the Lexington, Va.-based school announced Friday.

Chris Skretkowicz, who has served as an assistant coach at VMI the last seven years, has been named interim head coach for the 2013-14 season.

According to the statement issued by VMI, Trudgeon is the longest-serving wrestling coach in the history of the school, leading his Keydets to 160 dual-meet victories, the most in program history.

During his nearly three decades at the Institute, Trudgeon could claim a half-dozen Top 12 finishers at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, including two All-Americans – Charlie Branch, who placed fourth at 142 pounds at the 1994 NCAAs, and a sixth-place finish by heavyweight Leslie Apedoe in 1999. In addition, his Keydets were Southern Conference (SoCon) co-team champions three times in the late 1990s, and was named conference Coach of the Year four times.

Prior to taking the helm at VMI, Trudgeon had served as head wrestling coach at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Va., for eight seasons.

“Coach John Trudgeon has provided outstanding leadership for our wrestling program,” said VMI’s Athletic Director Donny White. “I am happy that he will continue to serve cadet-athletes in a new role in athletic administration.”

Interim head coach Skretkowicz has supervised the development of VMI upper-weight wrestlers among his duties on the Keydet coaching staff. As a wrestler at Hofstra University, Skretkowicz compiled a 140-24 mat record, and was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American (2003, 2004).

Trudgeon is the fourth Division I mat coach to have announced his departure this week. On Monday, Rande Stottlemyer revealed he was leaving his position at the helm at University of Pittsburgh after 34 years to take an administrative job, On Friday, Dave Amato announced his retirement after 30 years at Brown University… while Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville said that head coach David Ray would be taking an administrative position for the remainder of his contract.
