Virginia to lift ban on gun purchases

The state Senate voted 21-19 on Monday to lift the restriction on gun purchases, which was enacted nearly 20 years ago under Democratic governor L. Douglas Wilder to curb the state’s notorious role in gun trafficking along the East Coast.

The bill to lift the ban now goes to state Republican Governor Bob McDonnell for approval. The governor’s spokesman Jeff Caldwell said McDonnell plans to sign the bill into law.

Earlier this month, the state’s House of Delegates voted 66-32 in favor of the bill.

Advocates of lifting the ban say the measure will bring Virginia into line with the majority of US states. They also argue that limiting law-abiding state residents to one purchase per month is against their Second Amendment rights.

Opponents of the repeal, however, say doing away with the restriction will lead to a proliferation of handguns and an increase of violence in the state.

One of the worst shootings in US history took place at Virginia Tech University, where 32 people were killed in April 2007 by a student of the school. Another shooting at the same school in 2011 left a police officer dead.

Eliminating the one-gun-a-month limit is one of a host of pro-gun measures moving through the Virginia legislature.

Earlier this month, the state’s Senate passed a bill prohibiting localities from requiring that people seeking concealed handgun permits submit fingerprints as part of their applications.
