A prisoner locked up for theft and deception has used a taxi to escape a Victorian jail.
Justin Carruth, 24, made the jailbreak from Beechworth prison and managed to get a taxi to take him to Wodonga, about 40 kilometres north on the state’s border, police said.
Carruth slipped out of the prison between 7.30pm and 9pm on Monday night, police said.
Police have searched the immediate area but are yet to locate Carruth.
He is 193 centimetres tall with a medium build, short dark hair and weighs 100 kilograms.
He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and prison-issued green pants.
