Victoria says no to revised Basin Plan

THE Victorian Government will not support the Murray Darling Basin Plan released today to state water ministers for a six-week consultation period.

In the draft, the Murray Darling Basin Authority has not yielded on its previous target of 2,750 billion litres of water per year which it says is needed to return basin river systems to health.

It has, however, reduced the sustainable limit for groundwater extraction by 1,156 billion litres per year, from 4,340 to 3,184.

“This plan is a death warrant that will force agricultural industries across northern Victoria out of business,” said Water Minister Peter Walsh.

“There are smarter ways to achieve better environmental outcomes than stripping more water from rural communities.

Victorian Farmers Federation president Peter Tuohey described the revised plan as “a sham”.

“They’ve failed to listen to our call that all further water for the environment be recovered by more efficient watering of wetlands and river operations, not just buyouts of irrigator’s water,” he said.

“The Murray Darling Basin Authority’s consultative process has been a sham.”

New South Wales has reacted similarly with food production a major concern but South Australia is a state in uproar.

Premier Jay Weatherill labelled the latest river plan “entirely a political compromise” because it does not deliver enough water back to the environment.

The delivery of the revised plan is the result of a 12 month consultation process headed by MDBA chair Craig Knowles.

“We’re confident that the Plan is well balanced and presents a way forward on management of the Murray-Darling system,” he said.

“It is now over to the Basin ministers and the Federal water minister to lead the next stage of the Basin Plan process.”

The Greens are calling for the amount of water to be diverted back into the environment to be raised to 4,000 billion litres.
