Vic training site water is acceptable: CFA

The water at a Victorian training site does not pose a threat to firefighters, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) says.

While the CFA said interim testing at the Fiskville site showed the water used in training was in a good state, it is using a mains water hydrant for training and recruits will move to another site until the final test results come in.

A group of Melbourne Fire Brigade (MFB) firefighters deferred water-based parts of their training course at Fiskville last month amid concerns that recycled water used on practice fires could be making them sick.

The initial results of regular testing of the water showed it was within acceptable health parameters, CFA executive director of operational training and volunteerism Lex de Man said on Wednesday.

“The interim results received by CFA shows that everything is within acceptable limits and the water at Fiskville is in a good state and does not pose a threat to anyone using it for training,” Mr de Man said in a statement.

The CFA said last week some test results of the water in the dam used for training had indicated the levels for some measures were above the parameters.

The water in the holding dam was replaced with mains water and the second dam, used for training, was also treated.

“Further testing has since been undertaken and these testing results have returned showing the water is now OK,” Mr de Man said.

Training has continued using a mains water hydrant but that can only supply a maximum of two trucks on the training pad. Some training undertaken by recruit firefighters involves using five or more appliances at a time.

The CFA said recruits would train at the Longerenong campus near Horsham in coming days until final test results were in.
