Police uncovered one of Victoria’s largest drug labs and seized drugs worth up to $15 million in raids in Melbourne which ended with a siege.
Two men barricaded themselves in a Maribyrnong unit for more than four hours during the series of early morning raids.
Police say the raids unearthed one of the state’s largest and most sophisticated drug labs at a St Leonards home and led to one of the biggest drug seizures in recent years.
Detective Superintendent Doug Fryer said the discovery of the clandestine lab “should put a dent in the market”.
“Our clandestine laboratory squad say this is one of the most sophisticated labs they have seen in the last decade,” Det Supt Fryer told reporters.
He said the lab had drug-making equipment in every room and appeared to be capable of producing 15 to 20kg of amphetamines in one cooking process.
“The lab was that volatile that our chemists and investigators had to withdraw from the premises because it was too dangerous and we are in the process of systematically processing that,” he said.
“It highlights – and you see time and time again when these clan labs blow up – it was that risky that our people backed out until they could clear the air in the place.”
Det Supt Fryer said 15kg of methamphetamine were seized, with an estimated street value of $15 million.
Police made four arrests in total, after a six-month investigation by the Clandestine Laboratory Squad.
They uncovered two other alleged drug laboratories in Canterbury and Kew last year which they believe are linked to those discovered on Tuesday.
“We believe that the men we have arrested today are not just responsible for this lab but a number of others we have been investigating,” Det Supt Fryer said.
When police went to arrest two men, aged 22 and 28, at the Maribyrnong unit, they barricaded themselves inside and refused to leave.
“They didn’t threaten any of the police but they refused to come out,” Det Supt Fryer said.
Police say they found at least three loaded handguns and about $70,000 cash in the unit.
Raids were also carried out raids at properties in Ascot Vale, Brunswick and Hawthorn about 5.30am (AEDT) on Tuesday.
The two Maribyrnong men, a 36-year-old Ascot Vale man and a 25-year-old Brunswick man were being interviewed on Tuesday afternoon and were expected to be charged and face court later in the day.
A 29-year-old Hawthorn man and a 35-year-old Hawthorn woman were also assisting with the investigation, police said.
