Vic road toll a disgrace, say police

Police have branded Victoria’s rising road toll a disgrace and are pleading with motorists to take more care following a horror weekend when eight young people died in crashes.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos was speaking at the scene of the latest death on Wonga Road, Ringwood, in Melbourne’s east, where a man in his 20s was about to get into his parked car when he was hit by another car at 6pm (AEDT) on Sunday.

His female companion was also hurt in the crash and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“This time of year we are pleading with motorists to drive to the conditions and have some consideration for other road users,” he said.

“Everyone is responsible behind the wheel of a car and it’s about time people took that responsibility very seriously.”

He said the fact that 15 people had died in 11 crashes this month “was a disgrace”.

“Quite frankly, I think police are sick of going to these sorts of collisions,” he said.

“We are coming up to Christmas and we all want to see Christmas in one piece.”

The young woman who was fighting for her life after the car crash that claimed five lives in western Victoria on Saturday died in hospital on Sunday night.

The woman, in her 20s, was a twin of one of the other victims.

She had been on life support but police said she was declared dead at 7pm.

The car in which she was a passenger crashed into a truck in Penshurst, near Hamilton, about 12.45pm on Saturday.

The impact of the crash was so severe that it caused both vehicles to burst into flames.

Her death takes Victoria’s road toll in a horror weekend to eight.

So far this year, there have been 246 deaths, four fewer than at the same last year.
