Vic opposition warned: be clear on roads

The Victorian opposition has been warned to be clear on whether it supports Melbourne’s east-west link with the federal coalition pledging $1.5 billion to fund the road project.

The promise is part of the coalition’s $4 billion plan to reduce traffic congestion in major Australian cities and will be implemented within 18 months of taking office, Opposition leader Tony Abbott told the federal Liberal party council in Melbourne on Saturday.

The funding for the project, estimated to carry about 100,000 cars a day, is an important contribution for an east-west artery for Melbourne, says Victorian Health Minister David Davis.

He says the funding proposal means Victorian Labor leader Daniel Andrews needs to indicate whether he supports the project or not.

“This means the Victorian labor party will need to come clean on its position on the project,” Mr Davis told AAP on Saturday.

“Daniel Andrews can’t hide and needs to step forward and indicate his position clearly whether he would accept federal money to build what is a major piece of road infrastructure.”
