Vic men killed after release from custody

Two Victorian men have been killed in separate incidents soon after being released from police custody, police say.

A 41-year-old man was found by his father at a house in Endeavour Hills in Melbourne’s southeast about 10.30am (AEDT) on Saturday. He had substantial injuries and police believe a weapon may have been used.

Homicide squad Detective Inspector John Potter said the man had been in custody on Friday regarding a domestic dispute with his wife.

“At this stage whether that’s related to this investigation or not is not known, but it’s obviously an avenue of inquiry for us,” he told reporters.

Crime scene specialists are still working at the scene.

Det Insp Potter said the man, who is yet to be formally identified, was linked to the address where he was found but it was unclear why he was there.

Police have no suspects. They are talking to the man’s father, wife and brother.

In an unrelated incident, a 25-year-old man, who died in hospital from a street bashing at Horsham in western Victoria late on Friday, had been released from police custody hours earlier for a drink-driving offence.

Five men believed to be in their 20s are in custody over the bashing, which occurred about 10.20pm (AEDT).

Police are seeking a sixth man whose identity is known to them.

“At this stage we don’t know who’s done what,” Det Insp Potter said.

He said it was too early to say whether the attack was gang-related.

Police believe the victim was involved in a dispute with one of the men, a dispute which led him to an address in the area.

The assault took place nearby.

Police hope to find a weapon and have executed search warrants around the area.

Det Insp Potter said some of the men involved were known to police.

The victim had been released from police custody over a drink-driving offence for which he had been charged about two hours earlier.

Det Insp Potter said the violent nature of both deaths was concerning.

“The fact a man is bashed on the street in Horsham and as a result dies is particularly concerning, and concerning for that community. The same goes for the gentleman in Endeavour Hills,” he said.

Police are calling for anyone with information about either incident to contact them.
